Once you and your dentist have determined that Invisalign is the right treatment for you, you will have impressions prepared of your teeth, and your first few sets of aligner trays will be made for you. In most cases, patients will receive a few trays at once so that they don’t have to make follow-up visits too frequently. But although we don’t want to overdo it on the follow-ups, some checkups will still be necessary, and your dental team at Creekview Dental is always available should you have any concerns or questions about your Invisalign aligners.
What happens during follow-up checkups?
When you receive your aligner trays, your dentist will discuss a follow-up schedule with you. These visits are usually quick and easy, lasting only about 15 minutes. The purpose of these visits is for your dentist to monitor the progression of your teeth as they are straightened and, in some cases, to receive your next set of trays.
Depending on how well the treatment is working for you, your dentist may decide to modify your treatment plan – such as having you wear each set of trays for a longer or shorter period. Your dentist’s feedback is essential in helping to ensure the best possible outcome with your Invisalign treatment.
Dental cleaning and checkups
In addition to monitoring the progress of your Invisalign treatment, it is also essential that you maintain your regular cleaning and checkup schedule with your dentist. Although routine dental care like brushing and flossing is easier with Invisalign than with traditional braces, any orthodontic appliance can make your dental routine more challenging, so ensuring that you have your scheduled cleanings and checkups may be extra important to help prevent cavities and gum disease.
Replacing lost aligners
One huge advantage of using Invisalign braces to straighten your teeth is that the trays can be removed so you can eat or brush your teeth. This advantage, though, does come with a drawback in that it allows for the possibility of losing your aligners, which is quite a common problem.
If you do lose your aligners, it is important that you act right away and contact your dentist so they can order you another set of trays. Losing your aligners may set your treatment schedule back a couple of weeks, but if you wait to act, the setback could be longer.
Checkups after Invisalign treatment
After a patient has used their last Invisalign tray, their dentist will provide them with a retainer. It is essential that this retainer is used as instructed to ensure that the newly re-positioned teeth remain properly aligned. Your dentist will check your teeth to ensure that the retainer is being worn properly.
